EQUITATION
Effective Style and Correctness
Equitation means the Art of Riding Correctly, and in its broadest from covers many sections of Equestrian sport. It is a training discipline for riders of all ages, ranging from entry (grassroots) level competitions up to National Team andIndividual Championships for Children and Juniors.
The aim of Equitation is to produce effective, stylish riders in any discipline.
The rider performs a test on the flat comprising training movements, and then proceeds to jump a showjumping round.
The riders are judged, not the horses, so this discipline has been an excellent forum where a specialised horse is not a pre-requisite.
At the higher levels, riders are required to exchange horses and perform a prescribed test, showing their versatility, adaptability and horsemanship. The ability to ride and adapt quickly to strange horses is critical to South African riders, as it is nearly impossible to travel one's own horse internationally due to veterinary and financial constraints.
Although this is a development discipline, Equitation champions have moved on to excel in the major disciplines like Showjumping and Dressage. The past individual and Team Equitation Champions reads like a "Who's Who" of Equestrian Sport in South Africa, and several have left our shores and gone on to compete internationally.
At present there are about 200 riders competing in this discipline.

COMPETITIONS
These are held during the year at KEP and are mostly incorporated with Showjumping or multi-disciplined shows. Twice a year a festival show is dedicated to Equitation - all grades are catered for and two classes in each grade are offered. These festivals afford the competitor the opportunity to hone their skills and gain arena mileage. They also see the higher grades in action at more than one event.
The various showholding bodies also incorporate Equitation into their shows throughout the year. In addition, Equitation is included at Little League shows - a multi-discipline event for catering for children or 10years and under. Shows are well run and well attended by competitors, parents, family members and other connections, and our judges are of the very highest calibre. Suffice to say that many of our top National Judges are top competitors and coaches at first class livery yards.
