SHOWJUMPING
Courage, Power and Ability
Showjumping is the biggest and arguably most popular spectator discipline, where a combination of skill and co-operation between horse and rider produces a partnership where trust and courage are basic requirements.

The ability of even tiny women to compete equally against the strongest of men, on these equine athletes, over huge fences - often beating them, makes this sport truly unique.

This discipline has over 2000 GHS members between the ages of 5 and 60! - from young "Little Leaguers" at the lowest level, to our riders with National colours competing at International level.

Horses begin their Showjumping careers in the lowest grades for Children, Juniors and Adults. Adult horses progress from these Novice E Grades to Adult International A. This is done by the accumulation of points.

The time taken for an Adult rider to produce an International horse from scratch, depends on the scope and ability of that horse and skill of the rider.

Gifted horses, starting as 4 year-olds, can jump at the highest level as 6-year-olds, however it usually takes between 4-6 years to produce an International horse. These exceptional horses become "Characters", and have their own fan club. Famous horses from bygone years that became household names include Gonda Betrix's Honey Girl and Watch Fire, Barry Taylor's Power Force, Ronnie Lawrence's High Hopes and Gail Foxcroft's Bye and Bye, to name but a few.

More and more good quality imported horses are coming into the country, and breeders are introducing these internationally proven bloodlines into our locally-bred horses to improve the quality of our "sporting" horse.

Kyalami Equestrian Park hosts numerous shows. The Derby , with its daunting bank (a sheer drop of over 3 meters which only the bravest of horses and riders will attempt), the infamous "Devils Dyke" and other permanent features in the Arena is a crowd -attracting annual event

Riders compete for "World-Cup" qualifying points for the opportunity of being sent to the World Cup finals overseas, at five shows held in Natal , Gauteng (2), Eastern Cape and Western Cape.

The Rider's Championship is a unique event where the top 4 qualified riders compete on each other's horses to establish the most versatile rider.

South African Championships are held in the three age categories and GHS has produced numerous past and present South African Champions.

A glamorous Indoor Event is presently being planned to replace the Indoor Shows at the Sun City Superbowl and the Bellevue Velladrome.

The Sport is growing, and our annual Inter-District show brings riders from all over our regions, (Far North, Northwest, Mpumalanga ) to KEP to compete at the lower levels.

This show entices many new riders into the sport, and is THE event of the year for many out of province riders.

This versatile discipline offers competitions for all levels of achievements in all three of the age categories, and is most certainly an exceptional marketing tool, as it has huge spectator appeal.

An event shown on television offers Sponsors a cost-effective way of advertising a company's image as being sport-minded. This can be aired at prime time, and will reach a huge market.

How rewarding to utilise and capitalise on the intrinsic quality and grace of that "noblest of all creatures…. The horse"
